The extended introduction opens with a rousing fanfare, but also includes a quieter section in which the hymn tune and various countermelodies are shared between organ and brass. An energetic a cappella setting of stanza three is followed by a brief interlude for brass and organ before the concertato concludes with majestic brass writing and a soaring descant in stanza four.
