Rescue the Perishing
Text by F. J. Crosby - music by W. H. Doane arranged by Ken Litton
SATB, accompanied, opt. C instrument(s)

Based on a poem by the blinded, but prolific Frances J. Crosby and music by industrialist, philanthropist, inventor, choral director and church leader William H. Doane (1832 - 1915), Rescue the Perishing is both familiar to many and daunting to Christian believers. The command to us is as uncompromising as its overflow of concern for the plight of the unsaved.

Here, to express the latter, Doane’s tune falls into minor, only to be restored to major for the “duty” expressed in stanza 4.
In addition to unison, 2-part, 4-part and a cappella expressions there are opportunities for a medium voice solo and a brief bass or alto solo line, as well as the higher tenor (optional soprano) at the close. Even then, some alternatives/options are available, including the tenor voice just taking the final refrain and credenza a cappella, with the choir echoing at the ending or the piano or solo instrument taking the final chorus. In any case, the choir simply joins in the final statement, “Jesus will save.”

Along the way a C instrument—here expressed by a solo oboe—can make a solid contribution But, it remains truly optional as does the additional C instrument part offered in bass clef.

The accompaniment consistently helps the voices with some added variety while nearly always including the voice of the optional C instrument.

East of the Altar/Artist of Note arrangements are designed for choirs of medium ability, but of large interest in leading worship, exhorting believers and making disciples. Each is offered with true choral, accompaniment and stylistic integrity in voicings and ranges that set the melodies and harmonies—and, most importantly the text—in a singable and playable version that can be achieved within rehearsal limitations.
