Published by Adrian Dee (A0.1613379).I wrote this sweet little piece to encourage my mother to stretch her 90-year-old fingers. It worked. When I handed it to her, she said “... well, I don’t know…” but she immediately took it to the piano and started picking it out. We performed it together at her 90th birthday celebration in September 2019. She was actually born in November but she decided if the whole family was gathering, we should do it when the weather was nice.
The “reaching” motiv (rising step across the barline), is about reaching for the memories from childhood, or reaching for something more in life. Remembering Mom as the strong fearless activist. Now, much more pulled in and seemingly smaller.
We change each other as we interact over the years (key change), yet remain largely the same. Somewhat predictable, but not entirely.
We live with dissonance, blending the dissonance with the consonance. A familiar harmonic language, but not completely comfortable.
This piece takes the flutist into the 3rd register, but is not difficult. The piano part is also somewhat simple. Total play time is about 3 1/2 minutes.
