Johann Joachim Quantz, a German flutist and composer, occupies an intermediate position between the Baroque and Classical periods. His treatise "Versuch einer Anweisung die Flöte traversiere zu spielen" (1752) is a valuable source of information on ornamentation and performance practices of the 18th century. Quantz made significant contributions to the development of the flute. He added a second key to the flute and invented the sliding end used to tune the instrument. He also experimented with different woods and configurations to improve the instrument's sound and versatility. Quantz was a renowned flute teacher who significantly influenced the development of flute playing and composition during the 18th century.
