Psalm 23, one of the most beloved of all the psalms, appears quite frequently in liturgy. Even if you already have one or more settings of it, having another is a good way to keep the text fresh and prevent the boredom that can come with repetition. Here Stephen McManus sets the familiar, comforting words for two voice parts. The melody, with its delightful Irish lilt, is sung three times in order to set the full text. The first statement is unison, the second adds a soprano descant, and the third uses a different descant. This piece provides an excellent way to introduce harmony to young singers. If your youth choir generally doesn't sing in parts, consider teaching them the melody of this anthem and have 2 or 3 sopranos from the adult choir sing the two different descants above them. You can then capitalize on the enthusiasm they develop as they hear the wonderful harmonies by offering them some easy rounds or "second parts!".
