There is a building excitement in the piece as the parts enter with the theme closer and closer together. There are no dynamic markings in this piece, so there is just a suggestion at the beginning. Whenever the part becomes active, it should become expressive - otherwise, the half-notes are pulsing harmonic support of the melody. Otherwise, you have a blank slate of interpretive gestures to enjoy exploring.
