During my childhood I invented my own words in my prayers, and my imagination (e.g. enchantment) allowed me to hear them as sung by human voices. Many years later I found myself ensconced for hours at a time in churches and cathedrals, fascinated and marveling at human voices resonating within the walls in unbelievable echoes and reverberations that produced, at times, extraordinary, sometimes hallucinating, effects.
Humans have much to gain by singing when praying. Indeed, worldwide, irrespective of language or beliefs, the words of prayers are similar. And it is the music, particularly the human voice, that breathes the dimension and intensity into these adorations, demands, or thanksgiving.
The human voice is the most perfect, sensitive, musical instrument I know. It is the most appropriate to express the total experience of human feelings and sensitivities. Perhaps this is related to the fact this expressive transmitter is located midway between the brain and heart!
