Sean O'Loughlin's music is highly influenced by music for film, and this piece is meant to depict the action/battle music of the genre. Strong, powerful, and dramatic moments all permeate this piece from start to finish. It is a serious new piece for young bands.
Path of Destiny is a work for the developing concert band that reflects my love for battle music from movies. So many great movies have inspired some great musical moments. This piece is my way of bringing that music to the concert band world. Strong, powerful and dramatic moments all permeate this piece from start to finish. The piece begins with a powerful statement from the trumpets to announce the main melodic idea. The rest of the band responds with some dissonant chords that resolve after a dramatic crescendo. The woodwinds develop this trumpet idea with a softer hue in m. 9 that leads us into the faster section at m. 14. The trumpets and horns return at m. 24 for the first full presentation of the melody. After some development, a rhythmic idea appears at m. 40 in the woodwinds. This passes around to the brass and transforms back into the opening statement from the trumpets. The low voices command the melody at m. 64 with a powerful full sound. The tempo pulls back at m. 83 to add a new level of weight to the music. This all builds up to a climactic moment at m. 90. The faster tempo returns at m. 94 with a development of the rhythmic idea from m. 40. This development pushes towards a big presentation of the melody at m. 114. A final climactic moment lands at m. 124. Please encourage a rich, full sound while not overplaying the dynamics. The same should happen on the last chord.
