Composed by Lon W. Chaffin. This edition: pdf, streaming. 21st Century, Chamber, Classical. 46 pages. LCS Productions #1083959. Published by LCS Productions (A0.1508694).

There are three basic “characters” in the piece - the matador, alone and thoughtful, and forward-moving mood, and the crowd.

The opening horn solo and subsequent chorale represent the matador, and the stomps and claps from the crowd as it all builds to a climax.

With the confrontation concluded, as if the matador is moving toward the arena. The matador prepares, march-like, preparing for the event. This theme then takes on a more rhythmic, rhythmic jabs of the matador, spending time with his cape. (This is a contrapuntal duet between flute and clarinet. All the 16th-note passages in the piece represent the movement of the cape.)

The focus then turns to the crowd. This section begins with strong rhythmic stomping and clapping. The themes/characters begin to overlap and a type of fiesta happens.

We hear the traditional bullfight fanfare and the anticipation builds. We hear the flurry of the cape, the cape, the matador reflects for a few moments before the celebration/fiesta begins. The piece ends with a musical ¡OLÉ!
