Pangrams (2024) is a work for strings using my musical cryptography technique. It explores several English pangrams - sentences containing each letter of the English alphabet. The four brief movements are character studies - the opening, a slow nocturne or dirge; the second a sardonic scherzo; the third an aria; and the fourth, a tarantella-esque dance. While the pitch material is derived from the musical cryptogram, the other elements - form, orchestration, rhythm, character, etc. are left up to the creativity of the composer.
I. Sphinx of Black Quartz, Judge My Vow
II. Pack My Box with Five Dozen Liquor Jugs
III. The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over the Lazy Dog
IV. The Five Boxing Wizards Jump Quickly
The work divides the violin section into four parts, and features the principal players of the violin and cello sections in two of the four movements.
