He was born in what is present day Pittsburgh in 1826 and spent most of his life in the states of Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New York. During his early twenties Foster worked for his brother as a bookkeeper and managed to last for around four years in that occupation. Eventually, though, Foster's success as a songwriter prompted a change of career.
Oh Susanna remains one of Foster's most popular creations. I have re-worked the song, striving for a reflective, almost spiritual sound. I achieved this through the use of tight, jazz-influenced chords and interesting harmonies. This arrangement is for SSAA voicing and provides considerable harmonic scope and yet caters for the distribution of voices commonly encountered in many mixed voice choirs. This arrangement offers flexibility with the inclusion of a lovely optional piano part. This part may serve as suitable accompaniment for performances or simply be employed for rehearsal purposes by a cappella ensembles.
The uplifting ending of this arrangement is a feature of the work.
