Published by Cadence Blanchard (A0.1538765).In 2022, I was assigned to set a piece of music to words written by someone else within the public domain. I stumbled upon a poem written by someone dubbed ERH for the Emily Dickinson Museum's "Emilytober," of 2020. The museum's website shared the poem, among a few others, with the permission of ERH. This poem was created based on a line written by Dickinson. In my mind, I was more concerned about finishing the assignment, and set the piece aside once I had completed my draft.
In 2023, I picked it back up and eventually came to a final draft that I liked. It occurred to me to reach out to ERH, to obtain permission to use her words set to my music. She was ecstatic, and I agreed that if published, she would have all of the credit for the words, as I am not the most competent lyricist. Her poem is listed below.
October 1st
Emilytober Day 1
The morns are meeker than they were –
The daylight leaves in good time –
The cool breeze is our chauffer —
The leaves fall on a dime.
The fondness is familiar –
The Earth’s special redesign –
And as the world configures –
So too will I.
