The Octatonic Suite No. 1 for solo piano was written specifically for the 2002 Arcady CD A Beckett Miscellany. It draws upon the Baroque dance suite structure which by its very design provides contrast from one movement to the next. The stylised dances of this suite follow essentially this anticipated arrangement and its seven pieces are indeed all rooted in F. Of the modes of limited transposition favoured by composers since the early 1900s, the octatonic scale, which alternates whole and half steps, is probably the most useful in that it is able to suggest a full range of harmonic and melodic sonorities. This is a fun and not too difficult suite that pianists enjoy very much. This edition is arranged so as to facilitate page turns.
