"Nocturne" is a captivating work adapted from the incidental music for Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream, composed by the German master Felix Mendelssohn. Inspired by the Bard's fanciful tale of tangled lovers, mischievous fairies, and an enchanted forest, this music transports listeners to a magical midsummer eve.
The story follows four lovers whose romantic entanglements become chaotically intertwined thanks to the meddling pranks of the impish Puck with his love potion. To quell the madness he has unleashed, Puck casts a spell lulling the four into a deep slumber accompanied by Mendelssohn's wistful "Nocturne." When they awake, all is forgotten and order restored.
This transcription for brass ensemble exquisitely captures the longing melody originally voiced by solo horn, dividing it among three horns. The euphonium and bass trombone parts are interchangeable, though the powerful euphonium is featured during the work's swelling middle section. If performing without euphonium, some phrases differ slightly.
Two versions are included - the full-length original and an abridged edition better suited for certain programs and ensembles' abilities and stamina. Whichever you choose, "Nocturne" will cast your audiences under its dreamy, midsummer spell.
