Dieses im Auftrag von Paul Sacher entstandene Werk von Béla Bartók gehört zu den unbestrittenen Meisterwerken der Musik des 20. Jahrhunderts. Bartók brachte die Komposition in kurzer Zeit im Sommer 1936 zu Papier und zeichnete sie dabei, entgegen seinen sonstigen Gewohnheiten, direkt in Form einer kompletten Entwurfspartitur auf, die er anschließend mehrfach überarbeitete und schließlich dem Verlag als Druckvorlage übergab.
