Das expressive Werk mit dem schlichten Titel „Musik spielt im Weltraum. Grete von Zieritz vollendete es am 27. April 1957. Der erste sowjetisch Sputnik startete ein halbes Jahr später und die Komponistin wertete ihre Arbeit als „magische Vorausahnung weltbewegender Ereignisse. Nach der Uraufführung am 18. Oktober 1960 (durch den Klarinettisten Heinrich Geuser) bezeichneten Kritiker die Komposition u.a. als „vital und männlich, was zu jener Zeit als Kompliment für eine komponierende Frau gemeint war.
