Theatre,
a man on the stage. He is alone thinking of his beloved: "Charlotte! Adieu!". Charlotte passed away...

He is crying, shouting, he feels overwhelmed, without energy [notes played only with the left hand].

Someone knocks at the door [Improvviso, lento e dolente]. Who is it? What is it? Is it death itself? A little motiv has broken into the mind of a man: it is driving him crazy! He starts dancing a sarcastic dance [Allegretto marciante].

That little motiv is always there, with his persistent jumping notes. The man faces those notes with power, struggling … but at the end he falls down exhausted!

We are alone and without excuse...

Théâtre,
un homme sur scène. Il est seul, pensant à sa bien-aimée : « Charlotte ! Adieu ! ». Charlotte est décédée...

Il pleure, crie, se sent accablé, sans énergie [notes jouées uniquement avec la main gauche].

Quelqu'un frappe à la porte [Improvviso, lento e dolente]. Qui est-ce ? Qu'est-ce que c'est ? Est-ce la mort elle-même ? Un petit motif s’est introduit dans l’esprit de l’homme : cela le rend fou ! Il commence à danser une danse sarcastique [Allegretto marciante].

Ce petit motif est toujours là, avec ses notes sautillantes persistantes. L'homme affronte ces notes avec force, luttant... mais à la fin, il tombe épuisé !
