Hat sich fur KV 257 der Name ,,Grosse Credo-Messe" eingeburgert, so ist der Messe KV 262 die ursprungliche Benennung ,,Missa Longa" erhalten geblieben. Der grosse Umfang (,,Longa") und die starke Besetzung weisen das Werk der Gattung der Missa solemnis zu. Stilistisch kommt einerseits die aus dem Bereich der Vokalmusik stammende Kontrapunktik zur Geltung, wenngleich dem Chor keine uberragende Bedeutung zukommt, anderseits spielt das Orchester mit seinen der gleichzeitigen Instrumentalmusik entlehnten Formelementen eine entscheidende Rolle. Die das ,,Gloria" und ,,Credo" beschliessenden Fugen lassen die Messe dem Prunkstil angehoren.
