Cornelius Gurlitt (1820–1901) was a German composer, pianist, and music educator, primarily known for his contributions to piano pedagogy. Born in Altona, which was then part of Denmark but is now a district of Hamburg, Gurlitt came from a family with artistic inclinations. He studied under prominent teachers of his time and developed a strong foundation in classical music, which influenced his later works. Gurlitt's compositions were mostly aimed at young pianists and beginners. His music is characterized by its simplicity, clarity, and educational value. He focused on creating pieces that were not only technically accessible but also musically engaging, making his works popular in piano instruction. Some of his best-known pieces include Album for the Young, First Lessons for the Piano, and The Young Pianist. These collections feature short, melodic pieces that help students develop their technique and musicality.
