Composed by Elizabeth Walker. Edited by M. Orriss. Method book. Wonderful Winds #EW003. Published by Wonderful Winds (WN.EW003).
ISBN 9790570745999.
Another book in the series by Baroque Flute specialist Elizabeth Walker. The book features a collection of over 60 of Elizabeth's favourite baroque melodies, many written for flute, some taken from favourite orchestral and choral moments, and others ‘borrowed’ from singers or other instrumentalists, and adapted for flute. The book follows the same structure as her ‘Baroque Flute Studies’ book, with the melodies grouped within major/minor key structures, and the specific tonal challenges of each key are explored and introduced in the exercises that begin each chapter. The aim is not only to highlight the sonority of each key, but to enhance the techniques required to play the carefully chosen melodies with skill and accuracy of intonation and tone, refining phrasing by using the text where available, and improving the use of air with attention to how a stringed instrument might be using a bow. Although this book is primarily written for baroque flautists, there will be joy found on every page for the modern flautist, who will be encouraged to explore new examples of baroque repertoire and to improve both style and interpretation, tone and sonority.
