Mayreh is the opening song on my first big band recording under my own name, “On the Wild Side.” I was fortunate to have the legendary Bud Shank as an Alto soloist, and paired with trumpeter Clay Jenkins, they roared through this challenging chart. Horace based this tune on the old American standard “All God’s Children Got Rhythm” (check out measures 113-114 and the last two bars)
This arrangement is not for the faint of heart. The solo parts for Alto and trumpet are demanding and a strong lead trumpet player is a must...it helps if you can have Wayne Bergeron in that chair as on the recording.
I wanted to highlight the contrast between Bud’s improvisational style and Clay’s more contemporary approach, so there is an obvious shift in the chord changes (tertiary to quartal) from Bud’s choruses to Clay’s.
This arrangement swings no matter what the tempo and is a real crowd pleaser from concert to contest.
