Composed by Anton Bruckner. Arranged by Albert Schwarzmann. This edition: audio, pdf. 19th Century, March, Romantic Period. 50 pages. Edition Schwalbe #1197752. Published by Edition Schwalbe (A0.1629408).

Anton Bruckner wrote his original March in E-flat for an Austrian military band in the city of Linz in 1865. This Jägermusik (Hunters' Music) had a very special brassy scoring consisting partly of instruments, which are no more in use today. This kind of military band was dissolved only a few years after Bruckner had finished his march. As Bruckner had no idea himself how to score for such type of band, he used a march by his contemporary colleague Béla Kéler as template. There is no evidence that this march had ever been performed by the band of Linz or any other Austrian military band during his lifetime and was rediscovered even in 1924. In the arranger's opinion Bruckner used the form of a march and the scoring of this special military band but had no intention to compose a typical Austrian 19th century march like his template Apollo March by Béla Kéler. He regards the music as typical for Bruckner as we know it from his symphonic works and therefore demands for an interpretation beyond an ordinary march. So he advises different tempi for march (ca. 92 - 96) and trio (ca. 108 - 112) parts. To discover the essence of Bruckner's music he first wrote an arrangement for symphony orchestra and then retranscribed that arrangement for symphonic band. World known conductor Christian Thielemann led the first performance of this arrangement with Mozarteum Wind Philharmonic Salzburg on 16 March 2025 at the Great Hall of the Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg, Austria. The concert was also broadcasted by Austrian radio station OE1.
