Mañanica era (The Goddess in the Garden) is the 2nd song in a collection of seven settings of Spanish folk love poems called Canciones amatorias, H. 24. While the songs are difficult to date (likely sometime in the first decade of the 1900s), they are true representation of Enrique Granados' (1867-1916) personal musical language. The text, which includes both the original 17th century Spanish and an English translation by James Weldon Johnson, describes St. Juan's Day, which takes place every June 24th, and is celebrated in Spain much like St. Valentine's Day in English-speaking countries. Young girls place bowls of flowers outside their houses the evening before the feast. To the flowers they pin folded papers containing the name of one of their admirers. Early the next morning they look for the flower which first opens, and which bears the name of their Fate.
