London Bridge is Broken Down is an old English nursery rhyme that was first published in the eighteenth century. The rhyme's origin is mysterious, but many scholars believe that the text dates to a much older time, potentially back to the Middle Ages. The melody presented in this version is just one of many tunes traditionally paired with this text and its variations, but offers a refreshing change from the more familiar melody often associated with the words. This piece is designed to be customizable for ensembles, and is suitable for choirs from elementary through the secondary level. It may be performed a cappella or with accompaniment, and some sections have optional harmonies. Through repetitive and imitative phrases that build from simple to more complex, the musical roadmap encourages exploration within a fixed structure. In the style of many English folk songs, there are no pre-selected dynamics assigned to this arrangement. Instead, directors and ensembles are encouraged to decide on their own expressive interpretation that fits the ensemble skills, personality, and creative analysis of the piece. If performing with accompaniment, even the piano is given some optional creative license. Theoretically, no two performances could be the same. Have fun and enjoy!.
