“Like a Tree” is a Black Gospel song written by Margaret Douroux. Black Gospel music is an important American musical genre which developed from Spirituals and was influenced by early jazz and blues. Often exuberant is style and emotion, Black Gospel music has influenced other popular styles and artists. Since the texts of these songs are highly religious, their use in public schools is rare. “Like a Tree,” inspired by Psalm 1, has a text with broad appeal. Its message of strength in the midst of adversity is one with which all can relate.Margaret Douroux was born in Los Angeles in 1941. Her father, Earl Douroux, was a singer who toured with gospel artist Mahalia Jackson. Thurston Frazier, who was the minister of music at Margaret’s church, worked with the legendary gospel artist James Cleveland. This connection paved the way for Douroux's introduction into the Gospel Music Workshop of America. Since then, Margaret Douroux has written close to 200 gospel songs, some of which have been recorded by artists such as the Mighty Clouds of Joy and the Gospel Music Workshop of America’s Mass Choir. She is also the founder of the Heritage Music Foundation, an organization advocating for the advancement and preservation of gospel music.
