Don't let the beginning in C major fool you-- this piece is perfect for Halloween! It began as a study on several kinds of laughter, from the angle of someone taking an evening stroll, maybe on All Hallows Eve. After passing a holiday party, where light tittering is overheard from the warm, cozy rooms within, its mood grows darker and darker, descending into a vortex of ghoulish chuckles, and malevolent guffaws, finally ending at a deserted carnival grounds, where the carousel--reputed to be haunted--comes to life, begins turning, then a calliope starts playing...
In addition to Chopin, Tim Burton/Danny Elfman, the "Phantom of the Opera" Broadway and movie productions, I have to say that I was also inspired by Michael Jackson's "Thriller," and almost can hear Vincent Price toward the end.
