Lay VII ist Teil des umfangreichen Zyklus der Machaut-Transkriptionen (ED 21070), in denen sich Holliger mit dem großen Dichter-Musiker des 14. Jahrhunderts auseinandersetzt. Das originale Lay VII von Machaut, das wir der Ausgabe als Anhang beigefügt haben, ist dem Genre entsprechend lediglich einstimmig notiert überliefert. Bei Holliger wechselt diese Melodie nun kleinteilig von Stimme zu Stimme, während – einer Gepflogenheit zu Machauts Zeit folgend – die entstehenden Lücken durch überhängende Motivreste gefüllt werden.
