In the style of a spiritual, this piece begins with four brief, lullaby-like verses for bass solo with a humming, then “oo,” choir accompaniment. The second half launches into a hymn of praise for SATB voices, followed by a fifth choral verse and return to the refrain, which ends in a ff “Alleluia, alleluia, shout with joy, a king is born today!”
