This is an excerpt from Bizet's "L'arlesienne (the woman from Arles) ," which is incidental music for a sad love story in which the lover discovers that his love has been unfaithful. He then commits suicide. This was a popular theme in literature at the time (unreturned love). Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe even wrote a novelette called "The Sorrows of Young Werther" which has a similar theme. One might say that these were the predecessors of "Romance Novels" of modern times. The tone and character of this excerpt mirrors the tragic circumstances of the novel. Bizet himself played the keyboard in the debut of this stage production.
