Michiel Karatem, a school teacher and hymn writer, was born in 1934 in the Aru Islands, an archipelago in the Indonesian province of Maluku. These brief pieces can be used in a variety of ways during liturgy. For the “Kyrie” the basses could hum their initial pitch during spoken prayers before everyone joins to sing the piece as written. The “Gloria” could be sung as a refrain between sections of the spoken “Glory to God.”.
