Karl Holler wrote his A minor Quintet, op. 46, in June and July of 1947, the same year in which he composed his third and fourth string quartets. The Quintet follows in the footsteps of the great clarinet quintets of Mozart, Brahms and Reger, which were likewise written for A clarinet and have a similar formal design. The volume contains a detailed editorial commentary.
