Jéröme Savari was born in Paris in 1819. He was the Director of the Military Band of the 34ème de Ligne. A friend of Adolphe Sax, his works for the saxophone are among the first for this instrument. In addition to three fantasies for alto saxophone and piano, Savari wrote a series of ensembles which go from duo to octet. His works were published by Sax between 1861 and 1862. He died in 1870. This Quintet is in four movements. The initial movement is in a typical sonata-allegro form; The second movement is a pastoral which uses elements of French folk music. The third movement is a waltz with interludes in the style of Tyrolian folk music. The final movement is a lively rondo.
