In composing this music I had in mind that so much of the music written for English Horn is dark and sad. I determined to compose against that type. The Introduction, although slow, is pastoral and serene rather than mournful. The Theme with Variations is frankly cheerful, and often virtuosic, exploring the full range of the instrument.
