Normally, an organ must be present for the performance of Mascagni's Intermezzo Sinfonico. The organ must support the unison passages with the harmonies. An organ on stage for - often just - this piece is not something orchestras are happy with. These parts provide an excellent alternative. 2 clarinets and 2 bassoons provide an ideal sound where the conductor can still choose to play the parts like a static organ, with no dynamic differences, or that the wind section moves along with the dynamic line of the strings. The dynamics of the strings are reflected in the wind parts, making it an easy choice for the performers.
