It has been my experience listening and discussing jazz with young students, that many students amateur players overuse or misuse the blues scale. The idea that many young students and even some jazz educators promote,  is that the blues scale is a catch all which can be  played over every chord change in a song. Jazz is improvising a new melody based on the chord changes of the song. It is absolutely necessary to know the chord changes when one is attempting to improvise. To ignore this fact is to deny what the definition of "jazz" and what it is really all about. Many students simply apply the blues scale over any and all chord changes of a song and honestly believe that they are performing as a "jazz musician." Nothing could be further from the truth. This book deals with where the blues scale has its roots and demonstrates its proper use in the field of improvisation. It also gives the player many options of jazz phrases  based on the blues scale which can be used in normal chord progressions.
