Die Polka entstand nach Motiven aus Strauss' erster Operette "Indigo und die vierzig Rauber" (1781) und enthalt Themen aus der Ouverture, dem Marktchor und der Schlachtmusik. Sie wurde beim Maifest am 19. Mai 1871 im k.k. Volksgarten in Wien durch die Strausskapelle unter der Leitung von Johanns Bruder Eduard uraufgefuhrt.
