Composed by John Rox. Arranged by John Ivor Holland. This edition: audio, pdf, streaming. 20th Century, Christmas, Film/TV, Pop. 45 pages. John Ivor Holland #1122015. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1549653).

"I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" is a Christmas novelty song written by John Rox and performed by 10-year-old Gayla Peevey in 1953. The song peaked at number 24 on Billboard magazine's pop chart in December that year. Peevey was a child star who was born in Oklahoma; popular legend has it that the song had been recorded as a fundraiser to bring the Oklahoma City Zoo a hippo, but in a 2007 radio interview, Peevey clarified that was not that case; instead, the zoo and a local newspaper, picking up on the popularity of the song and Peevey's local roots, launched the Gayla Peevey Hippo Fund so she could be presented with an actual hippopotamus at Christmas. The campaign succeeded, and she was duly presented with a real hippo, which – as had been planned all along – she donated to the zoo; the animal, called Matilda, lived for nearly 50 years. This arrangement for jazz ensemble and vocalist is in B flat major (shifted up from the recorded G major) making it accessible for more singers. Alto Sax 2 is on Piccolo throughout and Tenor Sax 2 on Clarinet.
