Published by Karen Ivana (A0.1096166).This carol is set to words taken from a Medieval lyric (circa 1400) which may be one of the oldest poems in the English language about Mary and Jesus. It has been described as one of the first Christmas carols, and tells of the Annunciation, where the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary telling her she would bear a child.
This music is for four part mixed choir (SATB) and is based on a beautiful original folk tune (in Phrygian mode) and takes harmonic inspiration from early music but with a twentieth century English feel. It is gentle and reflective with some gorgeous harmonies and melodies; a successful performance requires a reasonable level of intonation and phrasing.
