The lyrics are by Francis Beatty Silverwood (1863-1924), a Los Angeles clothier, and the music by Alfred V. Frankenstein (1873-1934). It is used officially at funerals of California governors, most recently at the funeral of Ronald Regan. It was also played at Regan's inauguration as governor after which he quipped, "Thanks for singing a song old enough to make me feel young.".
