Hydrus is smaller than his counterpart Hydra, the largest constellation in the night sky. This constellation has been reconfigured more times than any other. Thus it seemed appropriate to use one of Messiaen’s scales of limited transposition, the sixth mode. The chord sequence is a palindrome, which is then reversed and flipped up to the right hand. From “88 Constellations” a collection by Heather Cattanach featuring one piece of piano music for each of the 88 constellations (to match the number of keys on a standard piano).
