Oatman was a 19th Century preacher and businessman from New Jersey, as well as a hymnist. Gabriel was a 19th Century singer, teacher, and hymnist from Iowa. The song speaks of the desire to be in a closer relationship to God. This hymn was my paternal grandmother's favorite. Laura Lorena Earl Hall (1924-1970) was her name and she was a well known Christian music singer in the southern part of Ohio. Section A and C are the verse. Sections B and D are the refrain.A modulation to a new key occurs towards the end of section B with the help of an Italian augmented sixth chord. A descant by yours truly is then introduce in section C. A deceptive cadence is introduce in measure 39 and then finally resolves to the tonic at the end of the piece.
