"Wandrers Nachtlied" (Wanderer's Night Song) is dedicated to my friend Dirk Ritter. When I visited him last summer at the end of his long struggle with illness I suddenly knew how to set this poem, which then came out in one go. It's a true wanderer's song; the singer walks, singing, out of life itself.
