Heart Flutters Woodwind Trio - Digital Sheet Music

Some time after my wind quintet “Winter Storm”, I composed this trio to work on some different writing techniques for wind instruments. This piece is about lightness, dialogue, and rhythmic precision. Each line makes up the fluttering texture, and the melody is meant to pass back and forth between the instruments; from where it says ‘Lightly’, the clarinet first has the melody for a complete phrase, then the oboe replies—but then the clarinet comes back to finish it. One of the articulations you will hear a lot of in this piece is the slur into staccato, which produces a kind of skipping effect that I find representative of a heartbeat. If you listen carefully, you will also hear the syncopated eighth notes that form either the bassline or the harmony. I think this rhythm sounds a lot like a heartbeat.
