Composed by Erik Satie. Arranged by Derek Hasted. This edition: audio, pdf. Romantic Period. Individual part. 10 pages. Derek Hasted #3417455. Published by Derek Hasted (A0.797676).
Derek Hasted writes "This set of 3 relaxing pieces is well-suited to the tone of the guitar, but in most arrangements there are tricky, tiring chords and position changes that spoil the gentle flow of the music.
In these arrangements I have made tiny changes to the score that ensure the pieces are much more accessible to those who are still progressing in the world of guitar - for example, I have switched the tune by an octave in one or two places, and replaced some difficult chord shapes with some much easier ones. Only those who know the original music like the back of their hand will notice the changes, but the improvement in continuity and playability is dramatic.
Each of the 3 pieces is a tone higher than the original piano version, to make full use of the open strings in the bass, where the depth and sustain are both very helpful to the flow of the pieces.
Gymnopédie No 1 has a large number of easy half barrés and a few full barrés. In places, there is a choice - keep the barré down for several bars/measures or finger some chords without a barré - an example is the first chord of the piece (and its subsequent repetitions), which can be taken without a barré, or alternatively a half barré can be left in place for the first 16 measures. The trade-off is one of sustain against stamina and that’s going to be a personal choice.
The less-well-known Nos 2 & 3 have a few unusual chords but the pieces are less tiring to play.
I have not included dynamics because the original markings relied on the piano having greater sustain than the guitar - it’s far better that you do what works for you and your guitar.
I hope you enjoy these charming pieces!"
