A Russian composer, Alexandr Gretchaninov was born in 1684 and died on 1956. After studying music theory and counterpoint in the Moscow conservatry as a student of Arensky and Taneyev, he moved to the St. Petersburg conservatry and studied composition and orchestration with Rimsky-Korsakoff. He was active as a composer for theather and church music after he returned to Moscow and remained in Russia for several years after the Revolution, he ultimately chose to emigrate, first to France in 1925, and then, at the age of 75, to the United States in 1939.
