Composed by Tetsunosuke Kushida. Chamber Music. Ensemble. Score & parts. Duration 5:30. Bravo Music #ENMS-84481. Published by Bravo Music (BZ.ENMS-84481).

Composed for Yumi Terada percussion ensemble, "Drive." This piece is based on the
concept of "Japan" which particularly interests me.
The theme was to capture the essence of a gorgeous image in Ukiyo-e. Many subjects in
Ukiyo-e, such as genre scenes, landscapes, and actor portraits, depict the ever-changing
aspects of "Ukiyo (modern world)." It is truly fascinating how the emotional aspects of this
bygone era continue to touch our heartstrings after hundreds of years.
The piece consists of four movements, each representing a different state of mind inspired
by four images. The movements are structured in western-music style: "Recitative,"
"Scherzo," "Aria," and "Danza."
The tone row used in each movement is entirely based on the J-Pentatonic scale. As for
the specifications of the shime-daiko and wadaiko (types and numbers), performers are
free to choose the size and number.
Non-beat and beat-driven movements take turns. The music progresses as other tones are
added to a melody line. Within this counterpoint, I believe an emotional essence is
released. "Drive" vividly expresses each image. (Tetsunosuke Kushida).
