He started playing the organ at an early age, becoming a well-known recitalist by the age of 14. He studied with Ralph Vaughan Williamsat the Royal College of Music, where he himself later taught. His best known work is the orchestral tone poem Aurora, but he also wrote many popular Organ works, which are now experiencing a resurgence.
Four Epilogues was written in 1953, and dedicated to Frederick Geoghegan, who at the time was at the Cathedral Church of the Redeemer in Calgary, Alberta.
