Composed by Michael Ware. 21st Century,Contemporary,Traditional. Educational Exercises. 9 pages. Michael Ware Music #918835. Published by Michael Ware Music (A0.1332059).
Inspired by popular internet memes, Food Rhythms is designed to teach simple meter rhythmic groupings to elementary musicians using the names of foods. The notated rhythms for each food are meant to mimic the natural way that name would be spoken. The goal is for students to be able to count complex rhythms in a fun way. This is a great activity to play at centers or in a small group. Both Color as well as Black and White versions are included. Great for centers or a group!
Instructions
1. Preparation | Print both pages of the Rhythmic Score. Print two copies of the Foods with 2 Beat Groupings page. Cut along the dotted lines to create manipulable cards for your students.
2. Composition | Lay out the two pages of the Rhythmic Score on a table or on the floor. Students should take turns speaking a rhythmic grouping and then placing it on the score. Students should practice speaking each measure after it is composed. When all of the spaces are filled on the score, you are ready for performance.
3. Performance | A student or group of students should be chosen as the leader. Another student or group of students should be chosen as the echo. Explain what the repeat previous measure symbol means. Using the included audio track, perform the new composition. There is a count-off to help the leader get started. Student(s) in the echo group echo what the leader spoke.
This activity may be recomposed and performed multiple times with different results. Be creative and switch up the leader and echo groups.
4. Optional | Perform the composition with the rhythmic counting system that you use in class instead of foods.
