This suite of five dances is a heartfelt exploration of Colombian musical traditions, intertwining my cultural heritage with my journey as an immigrant. Each movement honors the rich diversity of Colombian music while bridging past and present, homeland and abroad. The suite begins with a danza, inspired by the elegant, European-influenced salon music that once filled Colombia’s colonial halls. The second movement, a porro, bursts with the festive energy of the Caribbean coast, its lively rhythms and vibrant textures evoking a spirit of celebration. Next comes a pasillo, capturing the lyrical and poetic essence of the Andean highlands. The fourth movement shifts to the Pacific coast with an alabao, a deeply spiritual lament that echoes the voices of ancestors. The suite concludes with a joropo, a fiery and virtuosic dance reflecting the boundless energy of the eastern plains. Both the alabao and joropo include musical quotations and paraphrases from TÃo Guachupecito (a traditional song from the Colombian Pacific region) and Alma Llanera by Venezuelan composer Rafael BolÃvar Coronado. Commissioned in 2025 by Piano Spheres, a Los Angeles-based organization, this suite honors Colombian musical traditions while serving as a bridge between cultures. Through its melodies and rhythms, it invites listeners to reflect on identity, belonging, and transformation, fostering a deeper appreciation of the enduring power of cultural heritage.
