Reynolds composed five sets or volums of Fantasy-Etudes for various instruments, the majority with piano accompaniment. The final volume, for horn and piano, was comosed in 1992 at the request of one of his former horn students, Janine Gaboury. Ms. Gaboury and pianist Deborah Moriarity presented the first performance of the new piece in 1994 at Michigan State University/ The two artists have also recorded the Fantasy-Etudes, Vol. V. on a MArk compact disc, Verne-Reynolds - Music for Horn, MCD 1524. The Fantasy-Etudes, Vol. V., utilize a variety of musical styles and include portions that are unmetered, a device often employed by Reynolds that creates a feeling if improvisation and emphasizes freedom.
